STEP 1: DEFINE COMPLEXITIES
We conduct due diligence and benchmark your performance against our 36 methodologies. This process uncovers the complexities. Most complexities are due to two things: addition of compliance, instead of understanding root cause, and the closely related use of technology to automate workflow, instead of automating the work.
STEP 2: IDENTIFY CAUSES
We identify the root causes of the complexity. We establish facts and analyse the data. This is critical to avoid the cognitive bias that traditionally leads to problems. We want to understand the situation so well that we can establish what is value adding and identify unnecessary complexity. We take a functional approach to define what it is you need to do and why. The aim is to improve performance AND reduce costs.
STEP 3: ENGAGE PEOPLE
Having identified the gaps, we need to understand why things have ended up the way they have. We need to listen to the key players, understand the drivers that have produced this situation. We need to address the cultural drivers, in addition to the technical drivers, to ensure the solution will be adopted. Ultimately, the goal is to embed a culture of subject mastery, with decisions being made based on sound analysis of facts, not the repetition of experience, which is cognitive bias by another name.
STEP 4: DEVELOP PLAN
The aim of the plan is to introduce process to eliminate the root causes of the complexities, introduce digital technology in support of the process, and thus create the space for the pursuit of mastery. The digital infrastructure will automate as much work as possible and provide analytical feedback, facilitating the time, insight and learning to drive a culture of ongoing simplification until the optimum return from the business is achieved. We established the what and the why, now we can plan the how, who, when and where.
STEP 5: EMBED SIMPLICITY
Any change must be adopted. We build on the previous engagement with people by following a strategy of involving them in mapping of their own processes, so they see for themselves where the complexities lie, and what does not add value. This creates ownership and adoption of an approach that makes their lives easier. We also involve them in the comparison of their digital technology to the process, so they can again see what adds value and what doesn’t. We involve them in prototyping any new technology that is needed to automate the work as opposed to the workflow.
STEP 6: ELIMINATE COMPLEXITIES
With the new simplified approach in place, we reduce costs by eliminating what is now redundant: the unproductive, inefficient, and unnecessary. The process and integration with technology guarantees repeatability, the elimination of the unnecessary provides efficiency, the sustainable growth we set out to achieve.
